About Racism and Jews.

Shavua Tov!
It surely was an interesting Shabbat, we had some guests eating by us, as i wrote in my previous post.
During lunch, right after Challa eating, Alec was talking about the beauty of this area, and he explained to our guests that many famous people buy a house in the Amalfi coast, like actor Denzel Washington.
And from there, things got a bit...weird.
I was chewing my challa, and i couldn't believe i was actually hearing that: the conversation went on with a few of  the guys saying that black people are animals, that they act wild, and how can you even be friends with a black person?!
They called them "Cushim".
Alec was laughing to the nonsense of their words, and i was growing more and more annoyed.
How can we, Jews, be so racists? After all the persecutions?
Our guests continued explaining their mix of prejudice and ignorance, and when Alec asked them with a wink if they hated Obama because he is black, they answered: "Oh, but he is only HALF Cushi!"
I picked up my cup of Coke and declared that i would have NOT sit at the table with people saying such disgusting things, and i left the room.
I was so nervous that i wanted to cry. And slap them in the face. I felt a bit like a Jewish Joan Baez, protesting for people's rights.
I spent the rest of the meal reading books to the kids in the living room, leaving to Alec the mission to debate their statements (he is better than me anyway). I was so upset that i couldn't touch food.
When they left, two of the group came to say goodbye and Good Shabbos, and i nodded back a low tone "'Shabbos".
Alec later told me that some of the guys changed a bit their views, or at least had to admit that their words were not praiseworthy to say the least, and that some others were quiet. Only one or two continued to defend their position.
Well, a new week, a new mazal...Melave Malka? ;)

  1. Ciao!
